5 Things Anyone Can Do This Week to Be Safer

You don’t need to be technical. These five steps take under an hour total and close the gaps that most break-ins, scams, and account takeovers rely on.

  1. 01

    Change your router’s default password

Your internet router came with a password like admin or password1234. Attackers scan for these. Log in to your router (usually at 192.168.1.1), go to Settings, and change it. Takes 5 minutes.

    Step-by-step guide →
  2. 02

Turn on two-factor authentication on email & banking

Think of it as a second lock on your front door. Even if someone gets your password, they still can’t get in without the one-time code sent to your phone. Most accounts have this in Settings → Security.

    Why this matters →
  3. 03

Place a free credit freeze at all three bureaus

A credit freeze stops anyone from opening a credit card or loan in your name — even if they have your Social Security number. It’s free, reversible, and takes about 10 minutes per bureau online.

How to freeze your credit →
  4. 04

Test every smoke and CO detector in your home

Press the test button on each detector. If it doesn’t beep, the battery is dead or the unit needs replacing. Detectors older than 10 years should be replaced even if they still beep — the sensors degrade over time.

  5. 05

Check “Have I Been Pwned” for your email address

Go to haveibeenpwned.com, type in your email, and see if your password has been exposed in a known data breach. If it has, change that password everywhere you use it — and use a password manager going forward.
