What the Other Apps Are Missing

Platforms like NextDoor, Citizen, Facebook community groups, and Twitter local pages have tens of millions of users. They are genuinely useful for staying aware of what's happening around you. But every single one of them shares a fundamental blind spot: they are reactive, not proactive.

They tell you a car was broken into on your street last night. They don't tell you what to do to prevent it from happening to you. They confirm a wildfire is 40 miles away. They don't help you figure out whether your family should evacuate, where to go, or whether you have the supplies to survive if roads close.

The gap nobody is filling

• No emergency preparedness guidance — None of these apps tell you what to stockpile, what gear to buy, or how to plan for power outages, weather events, or civil unrest.

5. Know your regional risks — Use FEMA's National Risk Index to understand which hazards are most likely where you live and prep accordingly.
